What Comfrey Gives

The Material

Comfrey's real gift is to the soil. This is the part to lead with, and the part with no catch.

Liquid feed: pack cut leaves in a bucket, weigh them down, and the dark liquid that forms is a strong, free plant food rich in potassium.
Mulch: lay cut leaves around hungry plants and they break down into a feeding mulch.
Compost activator: a few leaves heat and speed a slow compost heap.
Potassium crop: the feed suits tomatoes, beans, squash, and anything fruiting.
Cut and come again: one plant gives several heavy cuts a year, every year.

Most plants take from the soil. Comfrey is grown to give back to it.

The Living World

Comfrey reaches what other plants cannot, and the whole bed benefits.

Deep taproot: it drives several feet down and pulls up minerals out of reach of shallow roots.
Bees: the nodding bell flowers are a strong early source of nectar.
Soil life: the constant leaf litter feeds worms and builds dark, living soil.
Orchard guild: planted under fruit trees, it feeds them and crowds out grass.
Ground cover: big leaves shade out weeds around the things you want.

It does not just feed your plants. It mines the ground to do it.

The Body

Comfrey has a real healing tradition for the skin, and a real reason it is no longer taken internally.

Knitbone: the old name comes from its long use on sprains, bruises, and broken bones.
Allantoin: a genuine compound in the plant that speeds skin-cell growth and tissue repair.
External only: today it is used in balms and poultices on unbroken skin, for short spells.
The alkaloids: comfrey also contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are toxic to the liver and can cause cancer.
Pulled from shelves: regulators removed comfrey supplements for internal use because of that liver risk.

The healing is real. So is the toxin. That is exactly why this is external only, and why the grade sits at B.
